Brakes

When your brakes start feeling sluggish, lack proper stopping power, or require you to squeeze the levers all the way to the handlebars, it’s definitely time for a trip to the bike shop. Over time, brake pads wear down and brake cables stretch, both of which can affect your bike’s ability to slow down or stop effectively.

Tires

Rubber can break down over time, even if you’re not actively using your tires, especially in hot, wet, or sunny conditions. As you log more miles, the tread can also wear out. Keep an eye out for signs of decay, often referred to as ‘dry rot’, and wear such as cracks in the tire, worn sidewalls with threads showing, a faded tread pattern, and bald patches. A tire with a flat spot down the middle, known as a “squared-off” tire, might also indicate it’s time for a change. Getting a new set of tires can help prevent a potential blowout.

Spokes

Healthy wheels are marked by evenly tensioned spokes. To check for loose spokes, squeeze two together at a time – you should feel resistance – and listen for any rattling when you spin the wheel. If your wheel looks wobbly when spinning, the spokes might need re-tensioning by a mechanic, a process known as “truing” the wheel.
